Would An Idiot Do That?

Do you watch The Office?

I mean, this is a coaching page for middle-aged men, so I have to think there is at least a 5000% chance that you watch The Office (just a guess).

If you do or at least did watch The Office, chances are you either loved or hated the character Dwight Schrute.  Possibly both.

And you know that Dwight probably had countless memorable lines.

Things like:

“Today, smoking is going to save lives.”

“The eyes are the groin of the head.”

And

“I’m ready to face any challenge that might be foolish enough to face me.”  (Note to self, this would make another great title for a blog post).
But the one that really sticks out to me as something I could embrace as sort of a life lesson or moto is:

“Whenever I’m about to do something, I think, “Would an idiot do that?”  and if they would, I do not do that thing.”

I know you’ve been there.  You just did something, maybe for the first time or maybe for the ten thousandth time, and you say to yourself, “What an idiot.”

Now let me say up front I don’t want you to believe in your heart of hearts that you ARE an idiot.  That is an ugly label to carry around.  DO NOT hold onto that as your identity.

But… It’s probably true that sometimes you ACT like an idiot.  And the more often you do it, in large and small ways, the bigger the hole you dig for yourself.

And I seriously doubt that you want to.  I’m pretty sure you’d rather not act like an idiot.

Cheating on your wife?  IDIOT

Ignoring the needs of your kids?  IDIOT

Drinking too much…. Again?  IDIOT

Sneaking off to look at porn?  IDIOT

Pounding half a dozen chocolate chip cookies before bedtime?  IDIOT

Skipping your workouts.  Not taking your prayer life seriously?  Cheating yourself out of sleep to binge on mindless TV.  IDIOT.  IDIOT.  AND, IDIOT.

Please do not misunderstand me.  I know that some of these things can fall into the realm of addiction.  And brother, if you are there, I’m sincerely sorry.  I’ve been there too.  It is no fun.  It can be downright terrifying.  Let’s get you help.

But if you are not that far down the road, I’m going to say that you have a fair degree of agency in these idiotic choices that you are making.

You see, the more often you keep making these decisions to be an idiot, the more likely it is that you will begin to tell yourself that this is “just who you are.”

But that is not true. If you don’t know that, I’m here to say it for you.  You are not that man.  You were made for more.  You were made for better.

Isn’t it time to make that last time…. The last time?

You are not an idiot.  Stop doing the sorts of things that an idiot would do.

You have it in you to be strong.  To be a leader.  To be the servant your family and community needs.  Today is the day to start making the choices that a man like that makes.

If you need a hand, I’m here to help you get you there.
